Honoring the Memory: “Remember Khojaly” Event in Houston, Texas

An event called “Remember Khojaly” dedicated to the memory of Khojaly genocide victims was held in Houston, Texas, USA.

Diplomatic representatives of Azerbaijan, Turkey and other countries, well-known figures of the local community, as well as members of communities friendly to Azerbaijan took part in the event organized by the Houston-Baku Twin Cities Association and the “Azerbaijan Center” operating under it and with the support of the State Committee for Work with Diaspora. .

At the event hosted by Leyla Taghiyeva, a young student studying in Houston, the national anthems of Azerbaijan and the United States were played, and the memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide was commemorated with a minute of silence. Then the participants of the event were given detailed information about the Khojaly genocide.

Later, short video clips related to the acts of vandalism committed by Armenians and the current construction works in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan were shown.

Texas House of Representatives member Harvey Johnson said in his speech that he has signed a declaration on the Khojaly genocide and will present it to the head of the diaspora organization. During his visit to Azerbaijan, he pointed out that he witnessed that it is a beautiful developing country. H. Johnson said that he was disappointed because he understood the importance of Khojaly genocide victims in the history of Azerbaijan, and emphasized the importance of peace and tranquility in the world, the need for friends to support each other and get out of the difficult situation in this direction.

Salhat Abbasova, representative of the State Committee on Diaspora Work, noted that for more than 30 years, the people of Azerbaijan have been demanding the punishment of those who committed genocide and crimes against humanity in Khojaly in international courts with the slogan “Justice for Khojaly” all over the world: “On October 15, 2023, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev’s raising of the Azerbaijani Flag in Khojaly raised hopes that “Justice for Khojaly” will be provided. Although the lives of the victims of Khojaly will not be restored by bringing criminals to international courts, there is no doubt that their spirits will be happy and faith in justice will increase in the society.”

Nigar Shirelizade, the representative of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in the United States, spoke about the statements made by international organizations regarding the genocide and called on the international community to be more fair in the Khojaly genocide issue.

Riad Efendi, the vice-president of the Houston-Baku Twin Cities Association, delivered a political-analytical report on the Karabakh and Khojaly genocide.

In the end, the head of the Houston-Baku Twin Cities Association, Irada Akhundova, thanked the participants of the event and noted that the memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide is commemorated every year, that reconstruction works are being carried out in the liberated territories and that the displaced people will soon return to their homes.
