Today, the Azerbaijan Society of Maine solemnly hosted a commemoration service to honor the victims of one of the most brutal atrocities of the 20th century – the Khojaly Massacre of February 26, 1992.

Our aim is to commemorate the spirits of those brutally murdered on that cold winter night of February 25-26, 1992, in the town of Khojaly, Azerbaijan, and to condemn the crimes committed against humanity. By remembering the victims, we take steps toward the recognition of this horrendous act and move forward together.

On that fateful February night, Armenian armed groups, with the support of the 366th Russian motorcycle regiment, launched a brutal attack on Khojaly, resulting in the massacre of 613 unarmed and helpless residents, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly. Families were annihilated, children were orphaned, and many were wounded, taken hostage, or still missing.

Unfortunately, war knows no bounds. It is our duty to speak out against such atrocities. Instead of allowing civilians to escape the invasion, they were aggressively targeted, with unimaginable acts of violence perpetrated against them. This is nothing short of genocide. At our event, we showcased posters and poignant drawings by our children, honoring the memory of the Khojaly victims. Our kids also recited heartfelt poems, while adults shared their memories of those dark days. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Board, parents, friends, and Munka Art Studio for their unwavering support and for hosting us.
