The Azerbaijani-American Youth Federation represented our country at the event organized by the International Education Society at the famous Columbia University located in New York City, USA, on the International Mother Language Day .

Active members of the organization – Harvard University graduate Ibrahim Mammadov and St. Francis University student Vali Valizade performed the national Azerbaijani dance “Shalaxo” at the event. Before the national dance number, the young people   introduced the audience to Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani dances. They pointed out that “Land of Fire” Azerbaijan is a Caucasian country located at the intersection of East and West. In the background of the scene, the image of the capital Baku, which is a synthesis of the historical Old City and the modern Flame Towers, is reflected. At the same time, the young people especially emphasized that Azerbaijan is a country that provided women with the right to vote a year before the United States . This fact aroused the interest of the foreign audience. The Azerbaijani dance, received with great enthusiasm, was welcomed by the foreign audience and caused applause and interest.

The chairperson of the Azerbaijan-American Youth Federation, Columbia University student Gunay Mammadova added a famous passage from the poem “Azerbaijan” by the great Azerbaijani poet Samad Vurgu to the “Poetry in Mother Tongue” corner organized within the event.

The event was also attended by Azerbaijani students and graduates who are members of the Azerbaijan-American Youth Federation, as well as student representatives of other nations .

It should be noted that the International Mother Language Day was established by UNES C O in order to keep the languages ​​of different peoples alive and at the same time to raise awareness about multilingualism .
